SAFETY AND STANDARDIZATION OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY

SEGURIDAD Y NORMALIZACIAN DE LA MAQUINARIA PARA OBRAS PUBLICAS Y CONSTRUCCION

In the first part, the elements of safety in the utilisation of construction machines are analyzed. The causes of accidents provoked by such machines are considered to be the following: (1) design and construction of the machine and lack of information on it; (2) the operator; (3) the organization of its utilization and the environment in which it evolves; (4) maintenance and repair. The problem is to create in the work a feeling of safety and to demonstrate that in the economic sense safety at work is economic. Finally the influence on the environment of the machine acting as a factor of safety in the work is analyzed. The second part reviews standardization and official approval of machines with a view to increasing safety in the field of construction, emphasizing the following aspects: (A) necessity of standardization of machines from the point of view of performance, mechanisms and spare parts; (B) standardization of information, which must be correct and sufficient in order to avoid ulterior risks; (C) official approval of machines for an accurate control of their characteristics with the object of safety in mind. /TRRL/
