THE PRESENTATION AND MANIPULATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES FOR NESTING

This study is based on research into the development of a computer-aided plate nesting system for use in the shipbuilding industry for the nesting of two-dimensional piece parts. Nesting objectives are dependent on the particular application, and from a description of the shipbuilding context, a set of criteria for a successful system are developed. The philosophy of a "semi-automatic" approach in which both computer and user play their full part is presented and extrapolated to a set of shape-matching techniques and heuristic nesting rules.
