In accordance with decisions, taken at the 1975 (Ottawa) meeting of the ITTC for examining the possibility of standardising procedures for predicting sea-trials performance (in particluar, power, thrust, and rpm) from tank tests, the Istituto di Ingegneria Navale (at Genoa University) and CETENA have collaborated in the collection and processing of data relating to recently-built Italian ships. The Author describes the methods used for the predictions, and presents and discusses the results (in the form of correlation coefficients for power and rpm) obtained for the first group of ships investigated by these two Italian organisations. Model tests for these ships (five container ships and six tankers) had been run in the INSEAN tank in Rome; the predictions were carried out by six methods proposed by the ITTC. It is concluded that the ITTC methods should be pursued and extended, so that decisions of practical value may be taken. The Istituto and CETENA are, at present, processing further data embracing as many ship-types as possible (as suggested in the ITTC prgramme). A great deal of work is involved in the collection and preparation of the data for the computer; however, the information that will be accumulated should be very helpful in developing a prediction methodology that is reliable and, above all, common to all those engaged in this type of work.
