CONVERSION OF 14,000-DWT TANKERS TO TANK-CLEANING STATIONS (PRAIA CLARA, PRAIA LIMPA, AND PRAIA BRILHOUNTE)

A description is given of the conversion of three tankers, the Praia Clara, Praia Limpa, and Praia Brilhante, into floating tank-cleaning stations for Societe Portugaise GASLIMPO. The conversions were carried out under the surveillance of Bureau Veritas. The cleaning stations can only service one vessel at a time. Before starting operations, the purification tanks are filled with clean water. Special tanks are set aside to receive the polluted water. The system is explained diagrammatically and the stringent safety precautions observed during the cleaning operations are described. Order from BSRA as No. 49,113.
