DETERMINATION OF BASIC DATA FOR A TRANSVERSE THRUST UNIT (BOW OR STERN THRUSTER)

From an analysis of published sources, formulae and a graph are derived enabling the designer to determine in a simple fashion the optimum r.p.m. of the transverse ducted propeller, and the power required, in a transverse-thrust manoeuving unit. To use these design aids, the designer only needs to know the magnitude of the transverse thrust. A comparison is made between the power as calculated here and those specified for their units by a number of well-known manufacturers. This suggests that the manufacturers tend to underestimate the powers required. Order from BSRA as No. 49,051
