ULTRASONIC TESTING OF HULL BUTT WELDS

Bureau Veritas has just published a Guidance Note NI 165-BM.2 on Ultransonic Testing of Hull Butt Welds. The Note is also available in English under this title. Owing to the continuing increase in tonnage of ships, such as tankers and ore and gas carriers, the lengths of hull welds to be inspected have increased considerably. Shipyards would welcome the chance of replacing radiographic inspection by ultrasonic tests, firstly because of the saving in time and secondly because of the increased safety for yard personnel. Although Bureau Veritas has for some time allowed a number of radiographic weld tests to be replaced by ultrasonic tests, the latest publication is intended to inform shipyard staff of acceptable ultrasonic test procedures for hull welds. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,977.
