TOBACCO: A SQUARE PEG IN A SQUARE HOLE

Some commodities may, for a number of reasons, have been slow to move into containers. One freight though for which this does not hold good is leaf tobacco. Probably the most concentrated box movements of the commodity are out of the U.S. to western Europe in general, and the U.K. in particular. The author reports on the way in which a selection of leading American and British companies in the leaf tobacco trade have adapted to the box and on what benefits and problems they have encountered in the process.
