VII California Bay Area Testbed Development Plan
This paper describes how the VII California program is a joint public and private sector initiative. Originally conceived of by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Caltrans, the first phase of the program, completed during the ITS World Congress, included participation from DaimlerChrysler Research & Technology NA and Volkswagen of America. More recently, Toyota InfoTechnology Center USA has joined the program partnership. MTC and Caltrans are now seeking to expand the program through partnership with additional original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), other public and private sector entities, and new applications and services. This expanded program allows the partners to truly demonstrate and evaluate the potential of VII. A successful conclusion to this demonstration may lead to a statewide deployment in accordance with the Governor’s California Strategic Growth Plan or serve as a catalyst for a national deployment. VII California is being implemented in two phases: a World Congress Demonstration and a VII Proof of Concept Testbed.
