A new study of the competitiveness of roll on-roll off (ro-ro) vessels in deep sea trades by the Marine Transport Department of the University of Liverpool, UK, reaches the conclusion that large ro-ro ships will remain economic in many trades even when port congestion is no longer a factor in their favor. In particular ro-ro may have a leading role in what may be categorized as mixed trades, i.e. where the volumes of semi-bulk and other specialized cargoes are not sufficient for separate systems and it remains economic for one large ship to carry vehicles, semi-bulk and heavy lift cargoes as well as containers.
