CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE STABILITY THEORY OF SHIPS

The use of the mathematical stability theory in assessing the intact stability of ships have introduced some new and mathematically oriented definitions and concepts into the literature of naval architecture. This article aims at bridging the gap between mathematically and physically conceived ideas in the assessment of the ultimate stability of ships. Within this context the concepts of structural stability, boundedness and sensitivity are briefly explained and their role in the system stability assessment are high-lighted.
