SITE LIMITATIONS PRODUCE UNIQUE BRIDGE DESIGN

Designing a 400 m bridge to cross the 137 m deep Auburn reservoir, California, between 40 degree slopes, in an area subject to earthquakes, resulted in the Hanging Arc concept. Existing design theories and construction techniques have been used to create a bridge which is the most economical. Economics of the hanging arc and approach layout and costs are discussed; and cable layout, deck design, stress analysis, and model tests are described.
