A test road section was constructed to compare standard construction techniques, using a granular base course between a subgrade highly susceptible to frost and the asphaltic concrete surface, with one in which a thick asphaltic concrete pavement was placed directly on a properly prepared subgrade. This latter method eliminated the cost of the granular base course, usually gravel and sand. The road consists of four sections each 50 feet long by 24 feet wide with a 4-foot shoulder on each side.
