TEST METHODS FOR EVALUATING SUSCEPTIBILITY OF STEEL PLATES TO LAMELLAR TEARING

The Authors describe and discuss the following methods of assessing the lamellar-tearing susceptibility of steel plate: tensile testing in the material-thickness direction; the Brodeau test (proposed by Commission IX of the IIW); the notched-bar impact bending test; the slice bend-test; the Cranfield welding test; the window test; the H-type restraint test; the Watanabe test; the Japanese chip (or tab) test; metallographic tests; and ultrasonic testing. Where appropriate, the various methods are shown diagrammatically and references are given to sources of further information.
