WELDING TECHNIQUES FOR AVOIDING LAMELLAR TEARING

The Authors (of the Technical University, Berlin) discusses some measures, that can be adopted during welding, for reducing the possibiltiy of lamellar tearing in highly-stressed welded components. The measures relate to the type and orientation of the welded joint, the welding sequence, the welding process used, the preheating and inter-pass temperatures, and post-weld heat treatment. Examples are shown of weldments in which lamellar tearing is liable to occur, and some methods of repairing damage due to lamellar tearing are briefly described. The use of materials that are not susceptible to lamellar tearing was discussed by the Authors in an early article.
