TEST RESULTS OF TRAFFIC REFORMS IN HELSINKI AND STOCKHOLM

LIIKENNE SANEERAUSKOKEILUJEN TUTKIMUSTULOKSIA HELSINGISTATE JA TUKHOLMASTA

Changes in traffic management measures were introduced in three areas in Helsinki and two areas in Stockholm; they resulted in a marked decrease in traffic volume in major streets. It was found that by reducing the number of intersections, the level of service of the street was raised. A survey was conducted of the attitudes of the public towards the modifications introduced. Only one factor, vehicle ownership, influenced the opinions of the respondents. It was also found that traffic restrictions are more easily accepted on through roads. /TRRL/
