CATALYTIC CLEANSING OF CAR EXHAUST FUMES - A NEW DEVELOPMENT

Oxidation catalysts have been used for the first time an a large scale to clean car exhaust fumes. Experience so far with respect to the cleaning action, vehicle operation and fuel savings is positive. Further development is determined by legislation. In the USA, together with a reduction of the limit values for hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide, a discussion is centred on the inclusion of other pollutants such as sulphuric acid, polycyclic aromatics, etc. The intended reduction of the limit value for nitrous oxide means that exhaust purification systems with "multifunctional catalysts" are gaining in significance as a second generation of catalysts. In parallel to this efforts are being made to improve and reduce the costs of the oxidation catalysis already in use. /TRRL/
