Defective shock absorbers have 2 main adverse consequences: (1) decrease of the sideways forces at high fluctuations of wheel loading; (2) high sway vibrations at fast variations of the steering angle. The investigation aims at clarifying the minimum effect with respect to necessary driving safety, as well as the question regarding the influence of individual defective shock absorbers. The results of 4 experimental arrangements are described and shown schematically: driving in a circle over a single obstruction, braking while driving in a circle, sudden turning, and slalom driving at constant speed around traffic cones. From the experiments it can be concluded that driving behaviour on winding uneven roads deteriorates more than proportionally to the lowering of the efficiency of the shock absorber, whereby the deterioration can be caused by a single defective shock absorber. /TRRL/
