MAKING ACCIDENT BLACK SPOTS SAFER IN THE ROAD NETWORK

ENTSCHAERFUNG VON GEFAHRENSTELLEN IM STRASSENNETZ

An accident black spot is classified as such if a number of similar types of accident occur there in relation to traffic volume per unit time. These dangerous points and sections in the road network have to be recognised in good time by their structural layout. This requires, together with practical experience in the design and construction of roads, a knowledge of the relations between road design and driver behaviour. A basis for this is provided by the relations between accident types and corresponding driving manoeuvres, driving manoeuvres and psychological aspects of perception, and before and after analyses of accident black spots. Using this knowledge it was possible to draw up A list of accident black spots which could be made safe by traffic engineering measures. /TRRL/
