FATIGUE AND CRACKING OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS

The concept fatigue is elucidated with the help of woehler's curve and miner's hypothesis. Various aspects of fatigue testing of bituminous materials, such as the type of loading, measuring techniques and the relation between the initial stress or strain amplitude and the life of the sample are described. Factors influencing the life, i.e. Materials parameters (properties of the bitumens, aggregates and mixtures) and external parameters (type of loading, temperature, 'healing') are discussed. The fatigue behaviour of bituminous materials is described with the help of a relation between the dissipated energy and the rupture of bitumens. On the basis of energy, dissipation fatigue characteristics of bituminous mixtures are determined. A laboratory apparatus for the detection and examination of cracking is described. /TRRL/
