EXPERIMENTS WITH FROST DAMAGE REPAIRS BY MEANS OF LIME STABILIZATION. PART 1

The present report describes tests of frost damage repair by lime stabilization of gravel roads. Trafficability for permitted light vehicles (the roads were closed for heavy vehicles during spring thaw) was immediately improved by the repair. The repair was carried out by mixing quick lime into the frost damaged parts of the road. In conjunction with the spring thaw the water content of the road material became very high which resulted in a low bearing capacity. By the addition of lime a rapid drying of the water sensitive road material was obtained. Frost damage was repaired on three sections (a total of 270 M) of the road. Of these damaged portions two were too deep to be completely treated with the equipment available. For lime mixing A simple mixing tool (disk harrow) and mixing equipment with acceptable capacity experienced in cement stabilization were tested. The test showed that for the treatment of deep penetrating frost damage the technique of lime mixing requires further improvement. An evaluation of the future damage reducing effects of the repair method could at the earliest be carried out after spring thaw 1978.
