Desirable and undesirable movements of the vehicle and its components, classification of disturbances and their influence on the structure of the vehicle, methods of calculation, examples and unsolved problems are discussed. The requisite elements and unavoidable influences in the dynamics of vehicles are shown in a table. In this connection detailed attention is paid to the influence of the driver, the vehicle and the environment. The undesirable dynamic behaviour of the vehicle induced by these factors has resulted in controversial demands. As regards demands by the driver it has not been possible up to now to dispense with the subjective assessment of the driver when considering all the driving characteristics. Included in the demands on the vehicle are vehicle handling and the stressing of parts in the assembly (wheel mounting, steering, tyres). Experiments and theoretical procedures (continuum models, rigid body models, models with hydraulic and electrical control circuits, models of men and vehicles) are quoted as methods which will solve problems created by the relevant demands. Finally a series of ideas are quoted for further development: braking force control to compensate for the unfavourable adhesion factors between tyres and road; active springing to improve the stress on man owing to vibrations and to improve safety in driving; micro-processors for interlinking complicated algorithms so as to improve longitudinal and vertical movements; further improvements in steering and wheel guiding systems in view of the driver/vehicle relationship, especially for critical situations. /TRRL/
