Redesign of a motorized society: role of new technology in public transit infrastructure

This paper reviews recent technology developments and future trends in public transit infrastructure in the context of redesign of a motorized society or in societies in the process of overcoming its issues of motorisation. Recent public transit development has been observed not only in the product itself, but also in a context of consolidated design with other urban infrastructures; this has greatly contributed to the many successes in attracting people to public transit systems. Technological development to achieve better efficiency , convenience and lower cost is must, and at the same time, attractive design is very necessary in order to get people to use public transit systems. Designs considered to be new and "cool" attract people and change their travelling behaviour. Many good examples are reviewed for cities in Europe. These examples offer a vision for desirable developmental directions for Asian mega-cities. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E213744.
