STANDARDIZED COMMODITY TRANSPORTATION SURVEY DATA BASE

This system is a computer based standardized commodity transportation data file that has been established for governmental and general public use. Its scope is presently restricted to primary non-local shipments of manufactured goods from producing plants by all major surface and air modes, including elements such as the Standard Commodity Classification Code, shipment weight, distance shipped, and origin and destination of the shipment. The sample is based on the public use files and other special computer tapes published by the Bureau of the Census from its Commodity Transportation Surveys of 1963, 1967, and 1972. The data have been adjusted for differences in units of reporting, changes in commodity classification, and errors in totals reported by the Census Bureau after publication of the public use files. The data are stored in a computerized data management system. A user manual describing the development, content, and application of the system is available at no charge from the Transportation Systems Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts, or from ADP Network Services in Washington, D.C.
