Finalising the Swedish GSM-R project
The development of the Swedish GSM-R network SIR by Banverket (The Swedish National Rail Administration) is described. The Swedish GSM-R network MobiSIR is almost built with approximately 800 sites along the Swedish mainline railway network. At present, verification of radio coverage and functionality in accordance with the EIRENE specifications is conducted by measurements on the main lines. The applications and prototype applications of MobiSIR are described: intranet, internet and e-mail (in operation), KIKA (a carbon strip camera detecting faults in the contact strip, prototype), hot box and hot wheel detection (in operation), passenger information displays (in operation), supervision of railway installations (prototype), RFID (radio frequency identification, in operation). All applications of MobiSIR are supervised by use of a PING command. Customer support is under the control of Banverket's organisation. The opportunities associated with GSM-R are discussed.
