Australian land transport is currently dominated by vehicles powered by internal combustion engines and shows little intermodal co-ordination. A long term strategy is needed to ensure that Australia has an efficient integrated land transport system in the future. In the short term, it appears that greatest benefit can be gained by more efficient use of existing resources. However, where alternatives are available, the long term strategy must be simply to encourage the use of the vehicle which most effectively fulfils the purpose. /Author/TRRL/
