A METHOD OF PREDICTING TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT AND QUEUES IN URBAN AREAS

This paper describes a computer based traffic assignment and queueing model called contram for use in the design of urban traffic management schemes. The model accepts data on time-varying flow demands and predicts flow and delay distribution. Traffic movement is modelled by grouping vehicles to form "packets". Each packet is assigned to a minimum journey time through the network taking into account delays and queues at junctions. An outline of the assumptions and structure of the model is given and also sensitivity tests and validation work are described. Two examples designed to illustrate applications of the model are described. /TRRL/
