This is the fifth edition of the association's bridge design specification, previous issues having been published in 1953, 1958, 1965 and 1970. As in prior editions, much of the specification is based on specifications issued by the American Assocation of State Highway and Transport Officials and NAASRA acknowledges the help obtained from AASHTO publications and research. A similar acknowledgement is made to the standards association of Australia whose design codes provided much of the basis for sections 5 to 10 and section 12. The major change in this revision is a one- third increase of the design vehicle mass with a slightly different axle configuration. Also more specific provisions have been made to check the structure for overload by including an abnormal vehicle load and configuration. Apart from section 2, design loads, many changes have been made in section 6, prestressed concrete design, which has been completely revised while section 7, structural steel design, has been rewritten to cover the types of bridges commonly built throughout Australia at present. A feature of section 7 is that it now covers both steel and composite bridges - the latter was previously treated separately. The basic design philosophy for both structural steel and composite bridges has not been altered radically. One new section (12) has been added to cover the design precautions to be taken for the loads applied during construction and design requirements for temporarty structures.
