New Driverless Metro in Brescia; Construction Update

Brescia Metrobus, a new system replica of the proven “ANSALDO driverless system product” already in service in Copenhagen, is now in the construction phase; developments and improvements of alignment and station architecture. The Copenhagen Driverless Metro, designed, built and operated by Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari, is enjoying its third year of successful operation. While the Metro established new architectural landmarks in some of the City’s most beautiful squares, the People of Copenhagen have accepted as a natural fact that trains can run safely and reliably without any staff on board. Now that automatic unattended trains and stations are a daily reality for millions of passengers around the globe, many Operators turn towards automatic driverless systems to solve their service flexibility and operational cost problems. This was also the choice of the Community of Brescia, in Northern Italy, when, on April 18, 2003, following an International Tender process, they awarded the contract for Design, Construction, 2-years Operation and 7-years Maintenance for the Prealpino to S. Eufemia “Metrobus” Driverless System (phases 1+2) to a Consortium headed by Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari S.p.A., with partners: AnsaldoBreda S.p.A. (Rolling stock), Astaldi S.p.A., Necso E. C. (Civil works). The actual start for the project was given on November 27, 2003. The driverless system was to be based on the Copenhagen Metro product and proven experience.
