Spiralling to the stars

This article describes the design, construction and use of a new multi-storey car park to a shopping centre in the borough of Croydon, London, UK. The access to the car park features an unusual arrangement of stepped spiral ramps, designed to reduce overshadowing to nearby houses. At first a complex sloping cantilevered spine beam was proposed but its cost and complexity caused a redesign. Metal decking is used as permanent formwork to an insitu slab. Usage was low when the centre and car park first opened but was increased by a competitive parking tariff, with incentives for short-term parking. Directional markers installed at corners reduced the number of cars colliding with curves and kerbs. The car park is easy to maintain and features a video camera security system. (A)
