INFLUENCE OF FILLER TYPES ON THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

The influence of seven different types of filler on the properties of bituminous mixtures is analyzed. They are: three fillers of volcanic origin, a lime filler and three fillers prepared in the laboratory by mixing lime filler with different ratios of montmorillonite. Several types of bituminous mortar (filler mixtures with bitumen) with the same effective volume concentration of filler were prepared. Thirty one asphaltic mixtures of 0/8 mm granulated asphaltic concrete type with different mortar ratios were prepared with them. Changes of some of the properties can be, according to Marshall, accounted for by the ratio of free bitumen in asphaltic mixtures. Marshall's method for testing the resistance of asphaltic mixtures to water action (by measuring the change in volume and properties that occurs after the mixture has been soaked in water at 20 deg C for seven days) has proved inadequate in evaluating the influence of the filler. The type and origin of fine aggregates seems to play a more important role. The method of testing the plasticity index offers a much better solution as it reflects the ratio of the ingredients that absorb water. /TRRL/
