Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee
This article describes the history and work of the Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC), a federal advisory committee that provides advice and consultation to the United States Coast Guard with respect to the water transportation of hazardous materials in bulk. The committee was established in 1949 and its scope has remained fairly consistent throughout the years. Committee members include experts in the field of chemical transportation from both the public and private sector. The relationship between CTAC and the Coast Guard has resulted in many positive advances in the safety of the maritime transportation industry. Recent initiatives have addressed maritime security, the human factor in safer transportation of hazardous materials, and fire protection.
