Aviation and road safety research in Australia: exploiting cross-modal synergies

Australia's airline transport safety record is amongst the best in the world, and the road crash fatality rate here is one of the lowest amongst motorised countries. General aviation flying, however, is less safe than car travel in Australia. Research is a fundamental and important element of any risk management program. This paper contrasts current approaches to the prioritisation and coordination of research activities in the road transport and aviation domains and outlines some recent and current developments aimed at enhancing the strategic effectiveness of aviation safety research in Australia.
