A theory is developed for interpretation of consolidation tests which are loaded continuously without being restricted to constant rate of strain, constant gradient, or constant rate of loading. The formulas given for the tangent modulus and the coefficient of consolidation include a slight approximation, but as will be seen, the results obtained are very close to the exact solution. Results from continuous tests on undisturbed clay samples are presented and compared with results obtained by incremental load tests. Procedures for determining the preconsolidation pressure are discussed. /Author/TRRF/
