TEST PROCEDURE: MEASUREMENT OF SUCTION IN SOIL BY MEANS OF THE PELTIER-EFFECT PSYCHROMETER

The geotechnical properties of soil/water systems are conditioned for the main part by variations in the pore water pressure. In unsaturated soil the study of pore water pressure is replaced by observations of variations in suction. The various devices used up to now gave only imperfect measurements of suction. The peltier-effect psychrometer gives a measurement of the overall potential including that of slats dissolved. The psychrometer method uses the properties of thermocouples and the relation between relative moisture and suction. Details are given of the various parts of the device together with different operations necessary for calibrating the apparatus; selection and preparation of calibration solutions, preparation of psychrometers and measurements of tension caused by the thermocouples. Using soil samples of any shape, it is possible to carry out suction measurements, moisture content measurements, and the plotting of the suction curve obtained by the psychrometer method. /TRRL/
