THE APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS TO PHYSICALLY DISABLED PEOPLE

This report aggregates information obtained through review of existing literature, discussions with disabled persons, interviews with researchers and administrators employed in the development or adaptation of technologies to aid the handicapped, and site visits to educational institutions for handicapped students, in order to analyze the effect of technological developments on disabled people. Two sorts of technical change are considered: (1) general developments intended to benefit the population at large; (2) specific developments directed to the needs of the handicapped in particular. The analysis includes discussion of the impact of change on employment, transportation, communication, housing, and self-care for specific groups within the handicapped population.
