Australia: the measurement and management of horizontal stresses resulting from heavy vehicle movements
Australia and New Zealand rely on relatively thin bituminous surfacings for their road networks. Austroads funded a research project to define the interactions between heavy vehicles and the pavement surface and to optimise the surfacing selection process. The project involved obtaining laboratory and field information on the performance of various surfacing types and their resistance to the effects of horizontal stresses. It also involved obtaining information on the extent of vehicle-pavement stresses from turning, braking and accelerating vehicles. Two sources of lateral pavement stress associated with the driving wheels are described. To provide data on the forces developed under different turning conditions, a transducer was developed to measure the levels of friction characteristic of different situations. Test methods capable of measuring surfacing performance in the laboratory and field have been identified. These include a modified wheel-tracking test apparatus with a skewed test wheel and stroke control mechanism.
