Quiet Pavement Scan and Implementation Activities (With Discussion)

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) jointly sponsored an international scanning tour of European nations focused on evaluating innovative pavement systems that have reduced tire-pavement noise characteristics. During the period of April 30 to May 16, 2004, representatives from Denmark, The Netherlands, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom hosted the fourteen scan team members representing FHWA, AASHTO, pavement industries, and academia. Innovative quiet pavement technologies evaluated in Europe that appear to have application for reducing tire-pavement noise in the United States include: thin, gap-graded asphalt, double-layer porous asphalt, exposed-aggregate concrete surfaces. A focused implementation strategy has been developed that will investigate and evaluate these innovative quiet pavement technologies for application in the United States and will ultimately lead to construction of demonstration projects on in-service highways.
