Short Sea Shipping in the United States: Identifying the Prospects and Opportunities
The increasing amount of trade and demand for transport is leading to many acute problems in the United States such as congestion and traffic. The use of sea transport is not utilized to its full possible benefits. This paper discusses the potential use of sea transport in a sector identified as short sea shipping. A decision model is introduced and is used to identify and explain the factors determining whether short sea shipping is viable for the port or not. The data from a study conducted on a port in the United States is analyzed and the results are presented in the context of the decision tool.
