Lancashire County Council's Speed Awareness Course (SAC)

This article presents the new Speed Awareness Course developed by Lancashire County Council, north-west England, for the referral of drivers caught speeding by the police. It is provided as an alternative to prosecution and involves payment of a fee and approximately six hours' attendance at the course. Drivers learn what causes speeding; the disadvantages and consequences of speeding; speed limits on different roads; and appropriate speeds. An educational reinforcement package is sent to participants three months after attendance. Client evaluation has been carried out and most drivers have a positive experience, and only a few committed a further speeding offence. The course is taught by Approved Driving Instructors who undergo regular training, and is being used to train representatives from other local authorities and police forces across the UK.
