PAVEMENT CONDITION EVALUATION UTILIZING DYNAMIC DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS

In this study, the research efforts were directed toward the development of pavement condition evaluation techniques and analysis procedures for flexible and rigid overlay pavement design. This investigation also included a detailed field evaluation of an experimental portland cement concrete pavement and the analysis of deflection responses of various test sites. A stepwise regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the relative significance of various design and construction variables on the pavement deflection under load. Various techniques recommended for pavement condition evaluation of pavement structures is reviewed and the Lin-Majidzadeh investigation of dimensional analysis using the pi term concept is presented. It is shown that the dimensional analysis provides a simple graphical solution to the design of flexible pavements utilizing the results of field investigation. A stepwise regression analysis of pavement deflection parameters indicated that the subgrade modulus, base course thickness and base type and drainage are among the most important parameters affecting deflection. The investigation of pavement joint movement as a result of temperature variation indicated that pavement movement due to expansion or contraction is linear. In this study a typical analysis procedure for overlay design of rigid pavements is presented. The results of deflection measurements are translated into pavement layer moduli and pavement stresses are calculated. Furthermore, temperature correction curves were developed using pavement deflection parameters, such as SCI, W sub 1 and SP. A relationship between pavement moduli and temperature was also developed. The procedures for determination of a temperature correction factor using the temperature dependency curves of the deflection parameters is recommended. /FHWA/
