Marine engineering is the part of ship technology that deals with the selection, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of machinery. These notes are intended only for the university student of ship design, and so do not cover all of these aspects of the field; the person being addressed here is most likely a student of naval architecture who needs to make an intelligent selection of machinery for his design, or he is a student of marine engineering who has the same need, plus the need to do sufficient design work to ensure a well-engineered machinery system. These students should be able to get the beginnings of their understandings here.
