THE POTENTIAL FOR USE OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS IN MICHIGAN'S PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEMS

The availability of various alternative fuels for public transit vehicles is examined, and funding opportunities for demonstration grants are discussed. The only alternative fuels that appear to be likely candidates for a demonstration grant in the near term are alcohol and synthetic fuels. The only likely supporter of a demonstration project is the U.S. Department of Energy, Division of Transportation Energy Conservation, which has tentative plans for supporting some demonstration programs of alcohol/gasoline blends in the near future. /UMTA/
