EQUATIONS FOR CALCULATING THE MEAN FREE DISTANCE BETWEEN AGGREGATE PARTICLES OR AIR-PORES IN CONCRETE

In the report there are derived different expressions for the mean spacing spherical inclusions in a matrix. Four of those expressions are based on the assumption of a certain regular spatial arrangement of the particles which are also supposed to be of equal size. The resulting equations are based on a hexagonal array of particles and a loose-packed array. One expression assumes that the volume fraction of particles with arbitrary size and spatial arrangement is so high that the seams of the matrix between the particles could be regarded as thin plates. Finally there is derived an expression by which consideration could be taken of a random spatial arrangement of particles which are of variable size. The size distribution is described through a distribution function. In the addendum there is shown how the so-called philleo spacing factor can be used for calculation of the mean free spacing between particles. /TRRL/
