THEORETICAL AND MODEL STUDIES RELATED TO FOOTINGS AND PILES ON ROCK

This report considers theoretical analyses related to the bearing capacity of isolated foundations located on or socketed into rock. Model tests related to this problem are presented and discussed in relation to the theoretical analyses. It is concluded that for most foundations on rock, allowable loading should be controlled by allowable displacement of the particular structure and not by the ultimate bearing capacity of the rock mass.
