Fibre reinforced polymer bridge decks in the UK

The UK Highways Agency (HA) commissioned a programme of research to investigate the application of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) highway bridge decks and to produce design requirements and guidelines for FRP bridge deck systems. The research included verification, through tests on a full-scale glass FRP bridge deck under dynamic wheel loading, that FRP can provide adequate service performance under ever-increasing weights and volumes of heavy goods vehicles. This paper presents the main conclusions of the test programme and describes how these were used to formulate design advice and requirements for FRP bridge decks, which have been incorporated into an HA Standard for use on UK bridges. In addition it reviews the development of two access bridges over the M6 motorway in Lancashire that utilise an FRP roadway deck, from the clients perspective, and considers related design and construction issues.
