EVALUATION OF A SPEED REDUCING DEVICE IN THE ROADWAY IN CONNECTION WITH A CONSTRUCTION SITE

With the purpose of improving security at road-works by making the drivers pass the construction site at a low speed a type of rumble strip was tested, these were placed across the roadway at two different distances (40 and 100 M) ahead of the construction site. During the work the traffic in the left lane was closed in one direction. The speed is normally limited to 70 km/h at the place where the survey was performed. The speed was limited to 50 km/h about 300 M before the construction site and to 30 km/h at the actual construction site. The speed was monitored by means of tv-techniques over seven different sections, the first located at about 200 M before the construction site and the last one immediately after the construction site. The result showed that when there is no work on the road, an average speed of 90 km/h is kept in the left lane and 70 km/h in the middle and the right lane. When normal protective devices for road-work were used the traffic was closed in the left lane and the average speed of the remaining lanes was about 60 km/h 200 M before the construction site and about 55 km/h at the place of work. When the rumble strips were installed the speed decreased so greatly that congestion occurred. The speed of the queue was claculated to be 10-15 km/h. /TRRL/
