The concept of electronic tolling is growing in popularity in the Asia-Pacific region. This article reviews some projects implemented in 2004. These include work on the construction of the tolled national trunk highway system in China as part of the 10th Five Year Plan for National and Social Development; Australia's new funding plan (AusLink) for its major road and rail systems; tolling systems on the West-link M7 and Cross-City tunnel in Sydney; plans for five cross river tunnels in Brisbane (Project TransApex); plans for an elevated toll highway through the centre of Surabaya in Indonesia; implementation of electronic toll collection (ETC) on key highways in South Korea; a contract for the construction of an ETC system under a build-operate-transfer concession in Taiwan; plans for toll expressway projects in Thailand; the change to the Touch 'n Go ETC system in Malaysia; the installation of ETC services at nearly all toll gates across Japan; and the implementation of phase one and two of the Auckland road pricing work programme.
