DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT TRAFFIC RESTRAINT STUDY. LOCAL ANALYSIS AREAS

In this study of traffic restraint it is pointed out that significant reductions of main highway traffic flows produce only slight relief in environmental impact, particularly with regard to noise. This is because much of the environmental deterioration has occurred on the local road system, due to growing car ownership which has caused congestion leading to increased traffic movement through residential areas to avoid delays on the main roads. Traffic restraint is therefore likely to produce greater environmental benefits if applied to local road systems rather than to main roads. This study investigates the effects of various traffic restraint policies applied to the City of Coventry. /TRRL/
