The purpose of this thesis is to explain the effect of the filler in asphalt paving mixes. At the same time this thesis gives information about a number of potential types of filler materials, and also establishes a basis for new Norwegian filler specifications. The thesis surveys current literature on fillers and presents the experimental work carried out. The presentation of the literature is divided into two sections. The first section deals with published articles on the subject. The second section is devoted to an extensive study of the existing specifications and standards. The experimental work reported covers three main subjects. The first includes experiments with pure filler material. These experiments are: determination of mineral content, aggregate gradation, aggregate form, surface area, voids content, bulk density in benzene and specific gravity. The second subject is the viscosity of the filler-bitumen mixes. The third covers the properties of pavement mixes. For this investigation the Marshall method and a Danish method for determination of stiffness were used. The tests include experiments on specimens with and without immersion in water. /Author/TRRL/
