PROTECTING ROADS AGAINST SNOW AVALANCHES

The first part of this thesis surveys the avalanche problem as it influences various state and country roads in three counties in Norway. To quantify the problems, tables have been worked out to show the period of time at which the various roads have been closed during winter seasons. In the second part various methods of protecting roads against snow avalanches are analysed together with the degree of safety associated with these methods. Experiments performed in order to develop less expensive methods of protection are also described, including the use of explosives and mortar shells in order to trigger avalanches artificially under controlled conditions. The use of mortar shells has not been successful, but placing large charges on the edges of mountain plateaus has given very good results. Finally specific phenomena connected to powder avalanches are discussed. /TRRL/
